Where was Eq-Western.com? The Kentucky Derby We toured the sites at Churchill Downs in Louisville, saw the Kentucky Derby Museum and of course took some time to visit "Man O'War's" grave and tour the farms in Lexington, among them world famous Calumet Farms. But no horsey vacation is complete without a purpose, so after watching morning workouts at Keenland Racetrack and browsing through the Kentucky Horse Park we culminated our trip with the real reason for our visit...a trip to the Maker's Mark Secretariat Center. The Maker's Mark Secretariat Center is a thoroughbred re-training centre operated by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. The centre, which opened in 2004 is a 22-acre facility that is able to accommodate between 15 and 20 ex-race horses at a time. While the majority of horses that end up at this facility are from the Kentucky race tracks, some travel from out-of-state to reach the facility which tries to give the horses 30-60 days of re-training before placing them in adoptive homes. Out of approximately 50,000 Thoroughbred foals that are born each spring, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is able to place about 30,000 in new careers. Eq-Western.com's horse Adoption Program works with organizations like the Maker's Mark Secretariat Center and other equine rescue organizations to place unwanted, abused or un-raceable horses into loving forever homes. For more information about adopting an ex-race horse, visit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation website at: http://www.trfinc.org/Adopt-a-Horse-c4.html or the Secretariat Centre directly at: http://www.trfinc.org/Makers-Mark-Secretariat-Center-c18.html **"Vince" (pictured in this article) is one of the horses currently up for adoption. He is 8 years old and broke. For more information about "Vince" or other horses available, please see the links above. |
